FanChoco School Caravan – Solving The Plastic Menace One Wrapper At A Time

To say plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to environmental sustainability is an understatement. To put it bluntly, the world is engulfed in plastic filth posing grave consequences to both humans and animals alike. The problem is purely human-generated and there is no denying that a collective effort would be required to salvage the situation and bring things under control.

Already the menace of plastic waste has prompted efforts to write a global treaty negotiated by the United Nations. The treaty signed in 2019 is supposed to serve as a wake-up call. But when you take a stroll along our beaches or water bodies, one would soon recognise the severity of the problem we face – and the fact that even without the UN treaty, we have got to do something urgent about the situation.

Corporate organisations have come to recognise that they equally have a duty to the society in which they operate as far as the issue of plastic pollution is concerned. In Ghana, Fan Milk for instance has demonstrated its practical solutions to the waste engulfing our environment.

The company in 2018 commenced an initiative to educate school pupils on proper disposal of plastic waste and practice this through a wrapper collection promo. The idea behind the initiative is to teach these young adults to keep their surroundings clean or proper disposal of plastic waste.

The Wrapper Collection Promo falls under the company’s FanChoco School Caravan project — a nutrition and sanitation program designed to educate children on nutrition and healthy lifestyle as well as the importance of sanitation. This year’s campaign also focused on creating awareness on the adherence to the covid-19 protocols.

As a member of the Ghana Recycling Initiative by Private Enterprises (GRIPE) – an industry-led coalition formed under the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) with a stake in the plastics sector to integrate sustainable waste management solutions, particularly around plastics – Fan Milk Plc understands that keeping the environment safe requires a multi-stakeholder approach.

Considering the fact that a long-lasting solution to the plastic menace requires a behavioral change, involving the pupils at such an early stage would no doubt lead to the desired outcome in the future.

At the event to reward the highest wrapper collecting students and schools, the Ghana Education Service director for Tema Metropolis, Mrs Bernice Ofori, made a profound statement that further underlines the essence of this initiative.

“Vast health disparities exist in our nation and far too many children do not attend school in environments that do not support their health. Unless we address these challenges, the consequences are enormous for children’s learning and for their lifetime health. I would therefore like to commend FanMilk Ghana for introducing the “FanChoco School Caravan campaign in our 104 schools,” she noted.

In her opinion, the fact that the campaign had an all-inclusive approach, engaging both the students and teachers and at some point even the parents demonstrate the commitment Fan Milk has towards nutrition and health.

The wrappers collected are sent for recycling in line with the GRIPE initiative. And according to Kwame Asamoa Mensa-Yawson, the Project Coordinator at GRIPE, the wrapper collection has been very impactful as it falls in line with GRIPE’s main goal which is recovering plastics from the environment.

“I would like to encourage the children to still take up this act of collecting plastics after the event and encourage their peers in schools, communities, and at churches to become improve on their waste practices,” he said.

The FanChoco School Caravan has come to stay, and it will continue in its efforts to educate students, teachers, parents, and the entire public on the importance of sanitation, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle and on Covid-19 protocols.

Let us all become a part of this great initiative by practicing proper waste disposal which will ensure that our environment is kept clean and made safe for generations to come.

It’s All About Exciting Thrillers As Africa Magic’s New Series, ‘Dilemma’ and ‘Venge’, Premiere In October

Africa Magic, the continent’s leading provider of premium and authentic African stories, for and by Africans, will premiere two new double bill telenovelas; Dilemma and Venge in October 2021 exclusively on Africa Magic Showcase.

Dilemma follows the lives of two estranged lovers – Kaineto and Kanan. After years of separation, they find their way back to each other and have to deal with a history they would both rather forget. Love leads them back together, but it may not be enough to conquer all the challenges they will have to face.

Dilemma will air every weeknight from Monday, 4 October 2021 at 8 pm on AM Showcase (DStv Channel 151). It stars some of the finest talents in Nollywood like Shan George and Bob Manuel-Udokwu, and new faces like Treasure Obasi and Vine Ogulu. It also features BBNaija stars, Neo Akpofure and Daniel ‘Sir Dee’ Atteh.

On the other hand, Venge tells a scandalous story of secrets, lies, and betrayals. Viewers will get to go on a journey with Bibi as she unravels several conspiracies trailed by murder and fear on her quest for justice and revenge. This telenovela starring Michelle Dede, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Obehi Aburime, Uche Mac-Auley, and Ian Wordi will air premiere every weeknight from Monday, 4 October at 8:30 pm on AM Showcase (DStv Channel 151).

These two new telenovelas present fresh storylines, suspense-filled plots and parades a mix of established and upcoming names in Nollywood that will have viewers from across Africa immersed in yet another top-notch Africa Magic production.

Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels, MultiChoice Nigeria, Busola Tejumola said: “We are excited to premiere these telenovelas on our Africa Magic channels as it once again underscores our positioning as Africa’s most loved storyteller. Venge and Dilemma explore modern-day themes that viewers will connect to at different levels. Each plot, twist and suspense will keep viewers from across Africa on the edge of their seats as they follow the drama and connect with the characters”.

Tejumola also disclosed that DStv and GOtv customers should look forward to other exciting new and returning shows towards the end of the year on Africa Magic.

The Producers, Uche Ikejimba for Dilemma and Tosin Igho for Venge both revealed that viewers should expect a captivating story, one that will keep them on the edge of their seats and glued to their screens.

On what makes the telenovelas a cut above the rest, Ikejimba said: “Dilemma is set in two-time jumps; 1998 and 2021. Viewers will have the luxury of experiencing the story in the 90s hence bringing back many nostalgic moments. This time jump gets to see characters grow as viewers experience their journey together”. For Venge, Igho said: “Venge is a fresh take on the Telenovela genre. It contains many of the same elements that audiences are used to but adds its own unique brand of action paired with a stunning visual style”.

DStv Premium viewers will be able to watch Dilemma and Venge on the go via the DStv app on multiple devices at no additional cost. The app is available for download from the Apple and Google Play stores.

Both series will also be available on the online streaming service, Showmax, which is available to DStv Premium customers at no extra cost.

Hollard Ghana’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Patience Akyianu has achieved continent-wide recognition as the African Female Business Leader of the Year at the just-ended 6th Invest in Africa Summit 2021 (virtual) organized by the prestigious African Leadership Magazine.

The award ceremony was held as a highlight of the 6th Invest in Africa Summit which was organized under the theme: Africa 4.0: Redefining Growth, Sustainability, and Innovation.
